following the Rattle

Getting to know Germany’s third B.

One of the things that Rattle has been getting grief for since he started to work with the Berliner Philharmoniker is the famous “german repertoire” that makes the case for the also famous “german sound”. For many critics, he was neglecting this repertoire, the central core of the germanic musical tradition.

It seems that all that Simon needed to make a good statement was time to study and understand that gigantic repertoire, specially the symphonic legacy of Brahms, one of the treasures of german symphonic music… well, you have to remember that there are enough wonderful and deep renditions of these symphonies, so the question is: why repeat what has already been done so brilliantly? and as we know, that is something that Rattle probably has in mind when he takes on a musical piece.

But now Rattle and his musicians are ready to present to the world a new way to Brahm’s symphonies… Germany’s third B is surely going to get more interesting… you do remember what Rattle has done with the other two B’s, right? -Beethoven’s symphonies and Bach’s Saint Mathew’s Passion…. so, let’s get ready for another musical journey:

Music is what keeps me going…I wish I was there to watch these geniuses in person. All the people must’ve been speechless in there…Simon is amazing.
