Ya dije que la vida privada se queda privada….
… pero no hay que negar que Simon es un hombre que se ha beneficiado de la presencia de las mujeres en su vida.
Las dos primeras presencias femeninas que más lo apoyaron fueron su madre y su hermana. De la primera, dijo en ocasión de su retorno a Liverpool en el 2008:
“…sí, al parecer le decía a la gente que estaba orgullosa de mí, pero ¿llegué a oírlo? no… de todos modos sé que estará ahí, en la sala de concierto, escuchando…”
Eso es típico de muchas madres.
En cuanto a su hermana, se sabe que Susan alimentó la obsesión de su hermano menor por la música, llevándole partituras para que leyera. Pero hay otra cosa que Rattle aprendió gracias a ella:
“Si yo perdía la paciencia, si mostraba algo de enojo o agresividad, eso ponía a Susan muy mal. Se ponía muy inestable. Así que enojarse era simplemente algo que no se podía hacer”.
Así que a Susan le debe esa paciencia que se le nota en la cara… pero paciencia no es sinónimo de pusilanimidad, y muchos hablan del mal genio que puede demostrar… como todo el mundo, si lo buscan, lo encuentran…
Es conocida la decisión de Rattle de tomarse un año para estudiar literatura en Oxford. Para él fue una experiencia totalmente reveladora, y tuvo este calibre gracias a la presencia de una mujer: la profesora Dorothy Bednarowska. En una entrevista en el año 2008, Rattle recordó en unas frases todo lo que le aportó esta maestra por medio del estudio de la literatura:
“Para mí fue maravilloso sentir que podía estar tan conmovido y exaltado por Andrew Marvell o Ullysses como podía estarlo por la música. Y claro, cuando volví a la música, había una cualidad e intensidad que se obtiene como cuando uno restaura una pintura.”
Otras dos mujeres a las que les debe mucho en términos de creatividad son las compositoras Sofía Gubaidulina y Kaija Saariaho, a quienes les ha encargado composiciones tanto para Birmingham como para Berlín. Ambas mujeres le han causado fuerte impresion por los caminos tan personales que han seguido en sus creaciones, sobre todo Gubaidulina, quien ha usado su profundo misticismo como una herramienta estética impactante.

Tampoco podemos olvidar la afición de Rattle por el jazz… de ese mundo, dos nombres femeninos se hacen presentes: Sarah Vaughan y Diane Reeves. A la primera la tiene como una de las mejores cantantes y a la segunda la ha llevado a Berlín, a cantar junto a la Filarmónica en un memorable concierto de Navidad que incluyó una jam session con uno de los violistas.

Y claro, están aquellas que han tenido un impacto mucho más íntimo y duradero, junto a su madre y su hermana.
Su primera esposa, la soprano estadounidense Elise Ross, madre de sus dos hijos mayores, Sasha y Elliot, a quienes ama mucho. Sasha estudia música en Berlín.
Su segunda esposa, la escritora estadounidense Candace Allen, con la que había construido una amistad larga que, tras divorciarse en 1995, se convirtió en matrimonio. De su relación, Rattle dijo que estaba basada en
“… profundidad y empatía infinitas..”

Además, Candace lo apoyó durante el proceso de divorcio y durante la transición hacia Berlín.
Y luego llegó la mezzosoprano checa Magdalena Kozena, con quien ya tiene dos pequeños, Jonas y Milos… esa unión causó un frenesí mediático que a Rattle y a ella les resultó supremamente incómodo, y claro, a Candace Allen también. Salieron varios artículos llenos de veneno respecto a los protagonistas… los cuales, obviamente, ni me molestaré en citar.

Al parecer, la vida les es generosa; ya han colaborado en diversas producciones, dos de las cuales ya están grabadas en c.d: Mozart arias y L’enfant et les sortileges.
Por el momento, estas son las mujeres más representativas en la vida de Rattle… el resto, queda entre Dios, la interesada y él.

… I already said that private life stays private….
.. but you can’t deny that Simon is a man that has been blessed with the presence of women in his life.
The first two women that helped him and supported him were his mum and his big sister, Susan. About the first one, he said on an interview on his return to Liverpool on 2008
“.. yeah, I heard that she had said to people that she was proud.. did I ever hear any of that? no.. but I know she’ll be there in the concerthall, somewhere, listening…”
This is just sooooo typical with many mums….
As for his sister, Susan, it is well known that she fed little Simon’s obsession by giving him scores to read. But there is something else he learned from her:
“She gave me a kind of equanimity. If I lost my temper, if there was anger showing, it really affected Susan badly. She would wobble-wobble over the edge. So, getting angry was something you couldn’t do.”
So he ows to Susan that cheerful patience you can see in his face… but patience is not synonimous with lack of balls… and many has seen this side of Rattle, whe he shows his temper.. like with many people, if you mess with him, you get him.
Rattle’s decision to go to Oxford for a year to study literature is well known. For him it was a groundbreaking experience and it was so thanks to the presence of a woman: professor Dorothy Bednarowska. On an interview in 2008, Rattle remembered all that this laureated teacher gave to him through the study of literature:
“There were things I wanted to study in depth. I also wanted to see if I could survive without music. There were tremendous hunger pangs, but it was interesting how anything else of the same specific gravity could fill that. It was wonderful for me to know that I could be just as moved and uplifted by Andrew Marvell or Ulysses as I could be by music. And, of course, when I came back to the music there was a quality and an intensity that you get when a painting is well restored.’
Simon has learned a lot about creativity from two women composers: the russian Sofia Gubaidulina and the finnish Kaija Saariaho. He has comissioned works from both of the, for Birmingham and for Berlin. These women have made a deep impression in him, for the personal path that they have chosen to pursue in their music.

We can’t forget Simon’s eternal love of jazz… two femenine names come to mind whe he talks of this: Sarah Vaughan and Diane Reeves. He thinks that Vaughan is one of the best singers of the world, and he took Reeves to sing with the Berliners in a memorable New Year’s concert that included a jam session with one of the violists.. watch and listen:
And last but not least, there are those women that have shared life with him.

Of course, when this relationship became official, the press released a lot of poison that I’m not even going to bother to quote… it was very bad and sad time for all three of them.
Aside from that, life has been good to them: they have worked together several times, and two of those colaborations can be found on c.d: Mozart Arias and L’enfanf et les sortileges.
